THOUGHT

The meeting of theoreticians of different nationalities
and cultures at the Mostra Pan-Africana de Arte Contemporânea
(Pan-African Contemporary Art Exhibition) prompted us to reflect on
the African Diaspora, by approaching subjects such as the rebuilding,
the dialogue with history, and the impact of this unique trajectory
on the lives and work of African and Afro-descendants. Four researchers
invited us to think about issues as diverse as identity, music, and
cinema. Their essays, published in the exhibition catalogue, suggest
that the cultural output – movies, books, music, to name a few
– plays an important role in the building of Afro-descendants’
identities, as well as in their study. Antônio Godi and João
Carlos Rodrigues, from Brazil, and Cheryl Finley and Zita C. Nunes,
from the United States, were engaged in meetings with the audience in
Salvador, in which they presented and discussed their ideas.
