JOÃO CARLOS RODRIGUES

The researcher discussed the participation of Afro-descendants in Brazilian
audiovisual production. João Carlos Rodrigues is a journalist,
researcher, writer, playwright, and film director. He edited “Filme
Cultura” (Movie Culture) magazine, co-authored the script to the
feature film "Rio Babilônia", directed by Neville d'Almeida,
and produced the CDs “Cult Alf” and “Johnny Alf/Eu
e a bossa”, both by Johnny Alf. Rodrigues, an expert in Brazilian
cinema, writes books that analyze national film production, and Indian
and Black characters. He criticizes the caricatural style and the recurrence
of certain stereotypes. Some of his books and articles include “O
índio brasileiro e o cinema” (Brazilian Indians and cinema,
1981), “O negro brasileiro e o cinema” (Brazilian Afro-descendants
and cinema, 1988), “Catálogo bibliográfico de João
do Rio 1881-1921” (Bibliographical catalogue of João do

Born in Rio de Janeiro, 1949, João lives and works in Rio de
Janeiro.
