ANTÔNIO GODI


The researcher discussed the musical output of Brazilian Afro-descendants, and the socio-economic impact of those populations. Essayist, Black culture researcher, artist, actor, director, and producer of theater, dance, and music shows, Antônio Godi has studied at Escola de Belas-Artes (School of Fine Arts) at Universidade Federal da Bahia (UFBa), and graduated in Ator e Direção Teatral (Theater Acting and Direction) at the Theater School in the same University. Godi has a Degree in Pedagogy and a Post-Graduation in Social Sciences and Communication and Contemporary Cultures. He teaches at Universidade Estadual de Feira de Santana (UEFS) and has founded S.A.M.B.A. (Social Anthropology of Music from Bahia)/UFBa, in addition to coordinating the UEFS Contemporaneity Research and Study Center. Godi has written scripts and directed music shows and theater plays such as “Estórias brasileiras” (Brazilian stories) and “Usura Corporation” (Usury Inc.). He has also produced several Salvador music groups. Godi has written papers that discuss, among other issues, the emergence of Indian and Afro groups in the Carnival of Salvador, reggae music and Black culture, and the importance of music as a key factor for the construction, acceptance, and legitimacy of Black culture.
