VISUAL ARTS

The work of artists at the Museu de Arte Moderna da Bahia (Bahia Museum
of Modern Art) is linked to Africa and its history by the memory of
the Diaspora, and by the complex task of building up a hybrid, original
identity. The historic Solar do Unhão building, in Salvador –
which held a slave house (“Senzala”) and a “Pelourinho”
during the 17th century – featured exhibitions by António
Ole, from Angola, Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons,
Cuban-based United States artist, Mario Cravo
Neto, Eustáquio Neves, and
Daniel Lima, from Brazil, as well as art
work from the national Senegalese exhibition at Ves
Rencontres de la Photographie Africaine BAMAKO 2003 (BAMAKO African
Photography Encounter V), promoting an active dialogue between contemporary
African art, and that of descendants from the African Diaspora.
