Uma instalação com imagens abertas do mar e do horizonte foi criada especialmente pelo artista baiano Mario Cravo Neto (Salvador, BA, 1947) para a Mostra Pan-Africana de Arte Contemporânea, que será inaugurada no dia 18 de março em Salvador. Batizada de “Somewhere over the rainbow”, ela não é uma alusão ao filme “O Mágico de Oz”, mas uma referência a um sonho do artista, em que o orixá Exu observa o mundo do alto. A obra, que reúne vídeo e fotos, evoca o horizonte e o mar, que ao mesmo tempo une e separa o Brasil da África. “Somewhere over the rainbow” marca uma nova fase na carreira do artista, em que se percebem grandes espaços abertos, exuberante luz natural, e o infinito do horizonte. Esta é a primeira vez que Cravo Neto faz uma videoinstalação. Nela, o visitante “mergulha” num ambiente formado por imagens do mar.

Aos 17 anos, Mario Cravo Neto realizou as primeiras experiências em escultura e fotografia. Nos anos 1960, estudou fotografia no Brasil, na Itália e nos Estados Unidos. No fim da mesma década, paralelamente às fotos, criou esculturas em acrílico, das quais faziam parte plantas vivas (como em terrários). De volta ao Brasil em 1970, expôs as esculturas na XII Bienal de São Paulo, em 1973. A partir da segunda metade da década de 1970 voltou sua atenção para a fotografia de estúdio. A obra fotográfica de Mario Cravo Neto dialoga com o imaginário da religiosidade católica e do candomblé.

A Mostra Pan-Africana de Arte Contemporânea tem curadoria de Solange Farkas, diretora e curadora da Associação Cultural Videobrasil, e é realizada com patrocínio da Petrobras, com apoio do Ministério da Cultura, da Fundação Cultural Palmares, da Embaixada da França no Brasil e da Aliança Francesa. Em 2000, em parceria com o curador Clive Kellner e com apoio do SESC São Paulo, a Videobrasil realizou a Mostra Africana de Arte Contemporânea, em São Paulo.

Além de Cravo Neto, quatro outros artistas ocupam o histórico Solar do Unhão, que no período colonial abrigou casa-grande, senzala e pelourinho: António Ole, de Angola, Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons, de Cuba/Estados Unidos, Eustáquio Neves e Daniel Lima, do Brasil. A escolha do local é tão natural quanto a da cidade de Salvador, que reúne uma das maiores populações de afro-descendentes do país, e que soube preservar e recriar tradições com raízes na África. A curadora Koyo Kouoh apresenta em Salvador quatro nomes da vigorosa fotografia contemporânea do Senegal. Eles representaram o país na quinta edição dos Encontros da Fotografia Africana BAMAKO (Mali). Na Sala Walter da Silveira será apresentada a mostra “L’Afrique se filme”, que reúne obras selecionadas representativas do Festival Pan-Africano do Cinema e da Televisão de Ouagadougou (FESPACO), em Burkina Fasso.

Para discutir a arte e a identidade de afro-descendentes serão organizados debates com os pesquisadores Cheryl Finley, Zita C. Nunes, Antônio Godi e João Carlos Rodrigues. O premiado escritor angolano José Eduardo Agualusa, um dos mais importantes escritores africanos de língua portuguesa, também participará dos debates.

Mario Cravo Neto (Salvador, BA, 1947) produced an installation with open images of the sea and the horizon especially for the Pan-African Contemporary Art Exhibition, which opens in Salvador on March 18th. Entitled “Somewhere over the rainbow”, the work is not an allusion to the film “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz”, but is rather a reference to a dream the artist had in which the ”orixá” Exu observes the world from above. The work, which combines video and photos, evokes the horizon and the sea that at once unites and separates Brazil and Africa. “Somewhere over the rainbow” marks a new phase in the artist’s career characterized by wide-open spaces, exuberant natural light and the infinite stretch of the horizon. In this Cravo Neto’s first video-installation, the viewer finds himself “diving” in an environment formed of images of the sea.

Cravo Neto made his first forays into sculpture and photography at the age of 17. He studied photography in Brazil, Italy and the United States in the 1960s, though also began creating acrylic sculptures mixed with live plants (as in terrariums) towards the end of the same decade. After his return to Brazil, in 1970, he exhibited some sculpture at the XII São Paulo Biennial in 1973. From the latter half of the 1970s he returned his attention to studio photography. His photographic work is a dialogue with Catholic and Candomblé religious imaginary.

The Pan-African Contemporary Art Exhibition is an Associação Cultural Videobrasil production under the curatorship of Solange Farkas, the Association‚s director and curator. The event is sponsored by Petrobras and supported by the Ministry of Culture, with the institutional support of the Fundação Cultural Palmares, the French Embassy in Brazil and Aliança Francesa (The French Alliance). In 2002, in partnership with the curator Clive Kellner and with the support of SESC São Paulo, Videobrasil also presented the Contemporary African Art Show, in São Paulo.

In addition to Cravo Neto, four other artists will be showing their work at the historical Solar do Unhão, which during the colonial period was a manor, slave-quarters and pillory rolled into one: António Ole, from Angola, Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons, from Cuba/United States, and Eustáquio Neves and Daniel Lima, both from Brazil. The choice of this locale was as natural as the selection of Salvador itself, a city that boasts one of the country’s largest Afro-descendant populations and that knows how to preserve and recreate traditions from its African roots. The curator Koyo Kouoh will also be bringing to Salvador four names from the vigorous contemporary photography of Senegal who represented their country at the BAMAKO African Photography Encounter V (Mali). The screening “L’Afrique se filme” will be presented at the Walter de Silveira Salon, offering selected works from the Pan-African Festival of Film and Television held in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.

In order to discuss the art and identity of Afro-descendants debates will be organized with the researchers Cheryl Finley, Zita C. Nunes, Antônio Godi and João Carlos Rodrigues. The award winning Angolan writer José Eduardo Agualusa, one of the most important African writers in Portuguese, will also take part in the debates at the event.
