Instalações da artista cubano-americana Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons (Matanzas, Cuba, 1959) fazem parte da Mostra Pan-Africana de Arte Contemporânea, realizada pela Associação Cultural Videobrasil, e que será inaugurada no dia 18 de março, em Salvador: “Nesting”, “When I am not here. Estoy allá” e “Threads of memory”. Em seus trabalhos, a artista fala de deslocamentos e identidade, recorrendo à própria memória: a infância numa região de canaviais em Cuba, a longa viagem do avô africano para Cuba (um dos vértices do comércio de escravos), e sua própria mudança de país em 1990.

Campos-Pons emigrou para os Estados Unidos onde, gradualmente, começou a combinar meios como vídeo, performance e fotografia, criando instalações que remetem à diáspora africana, à vida de descendentes de escravos em Cuba e nos Estados Unidos, e ao legado (a marginalização) dessa história. Sua obra, muitas vezes autobiográfica, incorpora lembranças e experiências da infância, materiais, formas e cores que fazem referência a divindades iorubas. Em algumas de suas performances, ela pode, por exemplo, remeter à “santeria”, culto afro-cubano que mescla tradições religiosas iorubas e do catolicismo.

A Mostra Pan-Africana de Arte Contemporânea tem curadoria de Solange Farkas, diretora e curadora da Associação Cultural Videobrasil, e é realizada com patrocínio da Petrobras, com apoio do Ministério da Cultura, da Fundação Cultural Palmares, da Embaixada da França no Brasil e da Aliança Francesa. Em 2000, em parceria com o curador Clive Kellner e com apoio do SESC São Paulo, a Videobrasil realizou a Mostra Africana de Arte Contemporânea, em São Paulo.

Além de Campos-Pons, quatro outros artistas ocupam o histórico Solar do Unhão, que, no período colonial, abrigou casa-grande, senzala e pelourinho: António Ole, de Angola, Mario Cravo Neto, Eustáquio Neves e Daniel Lima (Brasil). A curadora Koyo Kouoh apresenta em Salvador quatro nomes da vigorosa fotografia contemporânea do Senegal. Eles representaram o país na quinta edição dos Encontros da Fotografia Africana BAMAKO (Mali). Na Sala Walter da Silveira será apresentada a mostra “L’Afrique se filme”, que reúne obras selecionadas representativas do Festival Pan-Africano do Cinema e da Televisão de Ouagadougou, em Burkina Fasso.

Para discutir a arte e a identidade de afro-descendentes serão organizados debates com os pesquisadores Cheryl Finley, Zita C. Nunes, Antônio Godi e João Carlos Rodrigues. O premiado escritor angolano José Eduardo Agualusa, um dos mais importantes escritores africanos de língua portuguesa, também participará dos debates.

The installations “Nesting”, “When I am not here. Estoy allá” and “Threads of memory”, by the Cuban-American artist Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons (Matanzas, Cuba, 1959) will be on show at the Pan-African Contemporary Art Exhibition. In her work the artist takes recourse to memory in order to speak of displacement of identity, drawing from her childhood in a cane-growing region of Cuba, her African grandfather’s long voyage to Cuba (one of the apexes of the slave trade) and her own change of country in 1990.

Upon emigrating to the United States, Campos-Pons gradually began to combine art modes such as video, performance and photography in creating installations that hark back to the African Diaspora, the life of the descendants of slaves in Cuba and the United States and the legacy (and marginalization) of this history. Her frequently autobiographical work incorporates memories and experiences from her childhood and materials, forms and colors that make reference to the Yoruba divinities. Some of her performances, for example, refer to “Santeria”, an Afro-Cuban cult that blends Yoruba and Catholic religious traditions.

The Pan-African Contemporary Art Exhibition is an Associação Cultural Videobrasil production under the curatorship of Solange Farkas, the Association‚s director and curator. The event is sponsored by Petrobras and supported by the Ministry of Culture, with the institutional support of the Fundação Cultural Palmares, the French Embassy in Brazil and Aliança Francesa (The French Alliance). In 2002, in partnership with the curator Clive Kellner and with the support of SESC São Paulo, Videobrasil also presented the Contemporary African Art Show, in São Paulo.

In addition to Campos-Pons, four other artists will be showing their work at the historical Solar do Unhão, which during the colonial period was a manor, slave-quarters and pillory rolled into one: António Ole from Angola, Mario Cravo Neto, Eustáquio Neves and Daniel Lima, all from Brazil. The curator Koyo Kouoh will also be bringing to Salvador four names from the vigorous contemporary photography of Senegal who represented their country at the BAMAKO African Photography Encounter V (Mali). The screening “L’Afrique se filme” will be presented at the Walter de Silveira Salon, offering selected works from the Pan-African Festival of Film and Television held in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.

In order to discuss the art and identity of Afro-descendants debates will be organized with the researchers Cheryl Finley, Zita C. Nunes, Antônio Godi and João Carlos Rodrigues. The award winning Angolan writer José Eduardo Agualusa, one of the most important African writers in Portuguese, will also take part in the debates at the event.
