O fotógrafo Eustáquio Neves (Juatuba, MG, 1955) apresentará em Salvador uma instalação inédita, especialmente criada para a Mostra Pan-Africana de Arte Contemporânea, que será inaugurada dia 18 de março no Museu de Arte Moderna da Bahia (MAM) e na Sala Walter da Silveira.

Neves, que ocupará uma das salas do MAM, criou a obra ”Outros navios”, em que projeta imagens de diferentes séries fotográficas: “Arturos”, que retrata descendentes de um antigo quilombo em Minas Gerais, “Boa aparência”, que faz um comentário sobre o racismo de anúncios de emprego que exigem “boa aparência” (forma velada de excluir negros), “Objetização do corpo”, sobre a ausência de negros na publicidade, e “Máscara de punição”, criado a partir de imagens do Museu do Escravo (MG) e de fotos de sua mãe.

A mostra Pan-Africana de Arte Contemporânea é produzida pela Associação Cultural Videobrasil, com curadoria de Solange Farkas, diretora e curadora da Associação. O patrocínio é da Petrobras, com apoio do Ministério da Cultura, e apoio institucional da Fundação Cultural Palmares, da Embaixada da França no Brasil e da Aliança Francesa. Em 2000, em parceria com o curador Clive Kellner e com apoio do SESC São Paulo, a Videobrasil realizou a Mostra Africana de Arte Contemporânea, em São Paulo.

Fotógrafo autodidata, Neves estudou violão clássico e química antes de se dedicar a uma obra que se destaca tanto pela escolha e tratamento dos temas quanto pela manipulação das próprias imagens. Negativos e cópias são expostos a processos químicos, num experimentalismo que as altera fisicamente e potencializa texturas e dramaticidade. Nos anos 1980, quando ainda trabalhava como técnico em química, Neves fotografou casamentos, fez books de modelos e criou cartões-postais. Foi somente no fim dessa década que a fotografia se tornou sua principal atividade.

A exposição intensifica as trocas entre Brasil e África, promove uma reflexão sobre a diáspora africana e o papel da arte na formação da identidade negra, e discute também as relações entre o continente e os países das Américas que participaram do comércio triangular em que o trabalho escravo era um dos alicerces.

Além de Neves, participam da mostra o angolano António Ole, a cubano-americana Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons, os brasileiros Mario Cravo Neto e Daniel Lima.

A curadora Koyo Kouoh apresenta em Salvador quatro nomes da vigorosa fotografia contemporânea do Senegal. Eles representaram o país na quinta edição dos Encontros da Fotografia Africana BAMAKO (Mali). Na Sala Walter da Silveira será apresentada a mostra “L’Afrique se filme”, que reúne obras selecionadas representativas do Festival Pan-Africano do Cinema e da Televisão de Ouagadougou, em Burkina Fasso.

The photographer Eustáquio Neves (Juatuba, MG, 1955) will present a previously unseen installation especially made for the Pan-African Exhibition of Contemporary Art, to be inaugurated in Salvador on March 18th at the Museu de Arte Moderna da Bahia (MAM) and at the Walter da Silveira Salon. Neves’ work, which will be mounted in a room at the MAM, was given the name “Outros navios” (Other ships).

The work involves the projection of images from different photographic series: “Arturos”, portraits of the descendants of integrants from an old fugitive slave camp in Minas Gerais, “Boa aparência” (Good appearance), which takes a stand against the racism inherent in job advertisements which demand a “good appearance” (a veiled way of excluding Blacks), “Objetização do corpo” (Objectification of the body), on the absence of Blacks in advertising, and “Máscara de punição” (The mask of punishment), created from images from the Museu do Escravo (Museum of Slavery – MG) and photos of the artist’s mother.

The Pan-African Contemporary Art Exhibition is an Associação Cultural Videobrasil production under the curatorship of Solange Farkas, the Association‚s director and curator. The event is sponsored by Petrobras and supported by the Ministry of Culture, with the institutional support of the Fundação Cultural Palmares, the French Embassy in Brazil and Aliança Francesa (The French Alliance). In 2002, in partnership with the curator Clive Kellner and with the support of SESC São Paulo, Videobrasil also presented the Contemporary African Art Show, in São Paulo.

A self-taught photographer, Neves studied classical violin and chemistry before dedicating himself to a body of work that stands out as much for the choice and treatment of its themes as for the manipulation of the images themselves. Negatives and copies are exposed to chemical processes as part of an experimentalism that physically alters them and heightens their texture and dramatic quality. In the 1980s, while still working as a chemical technician, Neves photographed weddings, worked on models’ books and produced postcards. It was only towards the end of this decade that photography became his main activity.

The exhibition aims to intensify the exchange between Brazil and Africa, promote reflection upon the African Diaspora and the role of art in the formation of Black identity and discuss the relations between the African continent and the American nations that participated in the triangular commerce that was partly founded upon the slave trade.

In addition to Neves, other participants at the exhibition are António Ole, from Angola, the Cuban-American Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons, and the Brazilians Mario Cravo Neto and Daniel Lima.

The curator Koyo Kouoh will also be bringing to Salvador four names from the vigorous contemporary photography of Senegal who represented their country at the BAMAKO African Photography Encounter V (Mali). The screening “L’Afrique se filme” will be presented at the Walter de Silveira Salon, offering selected works from the Pan-African Festival of Film and Television held in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.
