Uma ponte de luz unirá de modo virtual e intocável o Solar do Unhão e a África durante a Mostra Pan-Africana de Arte Contemporânea, em Salvador, nos dias 18, 19 e 20 de março. A obra “Coluna Laser III – Mar” foi criada pelo artista Daniel Lima (Natal-RN, 1973) com orientação científica do dr. Eduardo Landulfo (USP), e consiste num raio laser que partirá de Salvador até se perder no mar, em direção ao infinito. O feixe de luz partirá rumo à África, religando os dois continentes por meio da tecnologia.

Bacharel em Artes Plásticas pela Escola de Comunicação e Artes da Universidade de São Paulo (USP), Lima pesquisa, desde 1994, intervenções potencialmente transformadoras do cotidiano urbano, em que explora possibilidades do desenho e do espaço em questão. Em seu trabalho, busca parcerias com outros artistas e grupos: é o que acontece, por exemplo, em obras audiovisuais que somam imagens, música ao vivo e narração, numa celebração de elementos da cultura urbana. Seus trabalhos subvertem noções de narrativa, tecnologia e informação.

A mostra Pan-Africana de Arte Contemporânea é produzida pela Associação Cultural Videobrasil, com curadoria de Solange Farkas, diretora e curadora da Associação. O patrocínio é da Petrobras, com apoio do Ministério da Cultura, e apoio institucional da Fundação Cultural Palmares, da Embaixada da França no Brasil e da Aliança Francesa. Em 2000, em parceria com o curador Clive Kellner e com apoio do SESC São Paulo, a Videobrasil realizou a Mostra Africana de Arte Contemporânea, em São Paulo.

Além de Lima, quatro outros artistas ocupam o histórico Solar do Unhão, que no período colonial abrigou casa-grande, senzala e pelourinho: António Ole, de Angola, Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons, de Cuba/Estados Unidos, e Mario Cravo Neto e Eustáquio Neves, do Brasil. A escolha do local é tão natural quanto a da cidade de Salvador, que reúne uma das maiores populações de afro-descendentes do país e que soube preservar e recriar tradições com raízes na África. A curadora Koyo Kouoh apresenta em Salvador quatro nomes da vigorosa fotografia contemporânea do Senegal. Eles representaram o país na quinta edição dos Encontros da Fotografia Africana BAMAKO (Mali). Na Sala Walter da Silveira será apresentada a mostra “L’Afrique se filme”, que reúne obras selecionadas representativas do Festival Pan-Africano do Cinema e da Televisão de Ouagadougou (FESPACO), em Burkina Fasso.

Para discutir a arte e a identidade de afro-descendentes serão organizados debates com os pesquisadores Cheryl Finley, Zita C. Nunes, Antônio Godi e João Carlos Rodrigues. O premiado escritor angolano José Eduardo Agualusa, um dos mais importantes escritores africanos de língua portuguesa, também participará dos debates do evento.

A bridge of light will unite the Unhão Manor and Africa in a virtual and untouchable way during the Pan-African Contemporary Art Exhibition, scheduled for March 18th, 19th and 20th in Salvador. This work, entitled “Coluna Laser III – Mar” (“Laser Column III – The Sea”), was created by Daniel Lima (Natal-RN, 1973) under the scientific orientation of Dr. Eduardo Landulfo (USP) and consists of a laser ray beaming out into the infinite from Salvador until it disappears from view somewhere across the ocean. The beam is on course for Africa, where it will reconnect the two continents through technology.

Holder of a BA in the Fine Arts from the Escola de Comunicação e Artes (School of Communication and the Arts) of the Universidade de São Paulo (USP), Lima has spent the last eleven years researching potentially transforming interventions within the urban cityscape through the exploration of the possibilities inherent in its space and design. In a celebration of the cultural elements of urbanity, Lima seeks out partnerships with other artists or groups when producing his work; as is the case with his audiovisual art, for example, which may include images, live music or narration. His work subverts ideas of narrative, technology and information.

The Pan-African Contemporary Art Exhibition is an Associação Cultural Videobrasil production under the curatorship of Solange Farkas, the Association‚s director and curator. The event is sponsored by Petrobras and supported by the Ministry of Culture, with the institutional support of the Fundação Cultural Palmares, the French Embassy in Brazil and Aliança Francesa (The French Alliance). In 2002, in partnership with the curator Clive Kellner and with the support of SESC São Paulo, Videobrasil also presented the Contemporary African Art Show, in São Paulo.

In addition to Lima, four other artists will be showing their work at the historical Solar do Unhão, which during the colonial period was a manor, slave-quarters and pillory rolled into one: António Ole from Angola, Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons, from Cuba/United States, and Mario Cravo Neto and Eustáquio Neves, both from Brazil. The choice of this locale was as natural as the selection of Salvador itself, a city that boasts one of the country’s largest Afro-descendant populations and that knows how to preserve and recreate traditions from its African roots. The curator Koyo Kouoh will also be bringing to Salvador four names from the vigorous contemporary photography of Senegal who represented their country at the BAMAKO African Photography Encounter V (Mali). The screening “L’Afrique se filme” will be presented at the Walter de Silveira Salon, offering selected works from the Pan-African Festival of Film and Television held in Ouagadougou, Burkina Fasso.

In order to discuss the art and identity of Afro-descendants debates will be organized with the researchers Cheryl Finley, Zita C. Nunes, Antônio Godi and João Carlos Rodrigues. The award winning Angolan writer José Eduardo Agualusa, one of the most important African writers in Portuguese, will also take part in the debates at the event.
