Cultura e política, raça e democracia são temas comuns ao trabalho da pesquisadora americana Zita C. Nunes, que falará ao público na Mostra Pan-Africana de Arte Contemporânea. O evento acontece na Sala Walter da Silveira e no Museu de Arte Moderna da Bahia, em Salvador, reunindo pensadores e artistas africanos e afro-descendentes, e promovendo o diálogo entre Brasil e África.

Em trabalhos anteriores, Nunes já analisou o modo como personagens de escritores americanos do início do século XX, como Nella Larsen, têm uma visão idealizada do Brasil. O país aparece como terra de todas as fusões raciais, em oposição aos Estados Unidos segregacionistas. A pesquisadora fala ainda sobre a formação da identidade afro-descendente em diferentes países, e os fatores que determinam a identificação ou não com uma comunidade.

Professora assistente do Departamento de Inglês e Literatura Comparada da University of Maryland, College Park, Nunes foi pesquisadora visitante e professora convidada de centros de estudos latino-americanos como a Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, a Universidad Interamericana (Buenos Aires, Argentina), e a Universidade Eduardo Mondlane (Maputo, Moçambique). Fez parte também do conselho consultivo da exposição de arte brasileira “Body and Soul”, no Museu Guggenheim, em Nova York (2001-2002). Estudou o modernismo brasileiro e aplica a noção de antropofagia a idéias sobre a formação da identidade nos Estados Unidos do século XX.

Nunes participará de uma mesa-redonda da qual farão parte também o pesquisador baiano Antônio Godi, o carioca João Carlos Rodrigues, e a americana Cheryl Finley. Eles abordarão, respectivamente, os temas produção musical de afro-brasileiros, o cinema nacional e os negros, e o “turismo de raízes”.

A mostra Pan-Africana de Arte Contemporânea é produzida pela Associação Cultural Videobrasil, com curadoria de Solange Farkas, diretora e curadora da Associação. O patrocínio é da Petrobras, com apoio do Ministério da Cultura, e apoio institucional da Fundação Cultural Palmares, da Embaixada da França no Brasil e da Aliança Francesa. Em 2000, em parceria com o curador Clive Kellner e com apoio do SESC São Paulo, a Videobrasil realizou a Mostra Africana de Arte Contemporânea, em São Paulo.

Participam da mostra o angolano António Ole, a cubano-americana Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons, os brasileiros Eustáquio Neves, Mario Cravo Neto e Daniel Lima. A curadora Koyo Kouoh apresenta em Salvador quatro nomes da vigorosa fotografia contemporânea do Senegal. Eles representaram o país na quinta edição dos Encontros da Fotografia Africana BAMAKO (Mali). Na Sala Walter da Silveira será apresentada a mostra “L’Afrique se filme”, que reúne obras selecionadas representativas do Festival Pan-Africano do Cinema e da Televisão de Ouagadougou, em Burkina Fasso.

Culture and politics, race and democracy are themes that run through the work of the American researcher Zita C. Nunes, who will be speaking at the Pan-African Contemporary Art Exhibition. The event will take place at the Sala Walter da Silveira (Walter de Silveira Salon) and the Museu de Arte Moderna da Bahia (Bahia Museum of Modern Art) in Salvador and will unite African and Afro-descendant thinkers and artists in a drive to promote dialogue between Brazil and Africa.

In previous work Nunes has analyzed the manner in which the characters in early twentieth-century novels by such writers as Nella Larsen present an idealized vision of Brazil. In opposition to the segregationist United States, Brazil is shown to be a land in which all the races of the earth are blended together. The researcher will also speak about the formation of an Afro-descendant identity in different countries and the factors that determine whether or not they come to identify with any given community.

Assistant lecturer at the English and Literature Department of the University of Maryland, College Park, Nunes has been visiting researcher and guest lecturer at such Latin American study centers as the Universidade Federal de Rio de Janeiro, Universidad Interamericana (Buenos Aires, Argentina), and the Universidade Eduardo Mondlane (Maputo, Mozambique). She is also a member of the consulting council for the Brazilian art exhibition “Body and Soul” at the Guggenheim Museum in New York (2001-2002). She has studied Brazilian modernism and applies the notion of cannibalism to ideas concerning the formation of identity in the United States of the 20th century.

Nunes will participate in round table discussions alongside the researchers Antônio Godi, from Bahia, João Carlos Rodrigues, from Rio, and the American Cheryl Finley, raising respectively the themes of Afro-Brazilian musical output, Blacks and National Cinema and Roots Tourism.

The Pan-African Contemporary Art Exhibition is an Associação Cultural Videobrasil production under the curatorship of Solange Farkas, the Association‚s director and curator. The event is sponsored by Petrobras and supported by the Ministry of Culture, with the institutional support of the Fundação Cultural Palmares, the French Embassy in Brazil and Aliança Francesa (The French Alliance). In 2002, in partnership with the curator Clive Kellner and with the support of SESC São Paulo, Videobrasil also presented the Contemporary African Art Show, in São Paulo.

Among the participants at the exhibition are António Ole, from Angola, the Cuban-American Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons, and the Brazilians Eustáquio Neves, Mario Cravo Neto and Daniel Lima. The curator Koyo Kouoh will also be bringing to Salvador four names from the vigorous contemporary photography of Senegal who represented their country at the BAMAKO African Photography Encounter V (Mali). The screening “L’Afrique se filme” will be presented at the Walter de Silveira Salon, offering selected works from the Pan-African Festival of Film and Television held in Ouagadougou, Burkina Fasso.
