WILLIAM KENTRIDGE
William Kentridge makes marks on paper.

These marks in turn represent a series of narratives that depict not only the unfolding human drama of the characters in the films, but also the momentous history of apartheid South Africa.

His drawings and animated films circumnavigate the landscape and the city of Johannesburg as vehicles of memory.

From earlier works such as Felix in Exile, through Sobriety, Obesity & Growing Old to more recent, Stereoscope, Kentridge has, through an autobiographical process, mapped out the sociohistorical developments of South Africa's political and industrial changes.

The characters of Soho and Mrs. Eckstein together with Felix Teitlebaum merge with the changing political landscape through love affairs and turbulent events against the backdrop of mass protests through the city of Johannesburg toward democracy.

The artist's theatre productions likewise reflect the transitional nature of democratic change as in Ubu and the Truth Commission (1997), a work drawn from the Alfred Jarry's Ubu Roi and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in South Africa.

Kentridge is a master who has consistently married skillful vision with a body of work of excellence.
