Malusi tem doze anos de idade e vive nas ruas de Hillbrow. Ele acredita em Mamlambo - um espírito ribeirinho que muda de forma, seduzindo os homens até o ponto da obsessão. Seu despertar adolescente e os efeitos da inalação de cola mesclam realidade e fantasia em uma mistura perigosa e temerária. A paixão de Malusi por Inyie leva a um confronto fatal com o tio. Malusi is twelve and lives on the streets of Hillbrow, Malusi believes in Mamlambo - a shape shifting river spirit who seduces men into obsession. "It's the greatest thing you've ever felt. But then she takes over your life". "Then Malusi meets Inyie, a young Chinese prostitute who works in bondage for her uncle/pimp. His awakening adolescence and the glue sniffing merge fantasy and reality into a dangerous and heady mix. Malusi's infatuation with Inyie eventually leads to a fatal confrontation with the uncle. In the climax of this story, a twist of magical realism transforms Malusi's reality. How Malusi's friend says, "Who needs a girl like that?"

Be It / Então que seja Um dia de histórias. Uma clínica médica, uma sala de aula e muitos caminhos. Um homem e uma mulher são pegos em uma armadilha fatal, mas ainda assim o homem não quer deixá-la. O que o estaria prendendo? Ele não fala a língua das pessoas a sua volta e nem as conhece realmente. Parece que é um desejo de ajudar os outros; pelo menos é o que se diz. A mulher, a própria vida, tenta levá-lo adiante - mas sem sucesso. Será que ela o ama? Não há dúvida. Mas a pergunta é se ele a ama. Estará ele lá de fato? Parece que ele vive em um sonho, e mesmo quando eles se beijam, ela parece surpresa que ele tenha conseguido fazer contato. As únicas outras pessoas neste lugar isolado são duas crianças doentes. Uma menina cruel e endurecida e Ifada, um jovem albino de alma simples e coração sensível. Poderiam eles ser imagens especulares dos dois adultos? De repente, parece que ninguém pode ser salvo, nada pode ser criado e nada resolvido. Então que seja é a estória arrepiante de dois jovens que lutam em vão contra as crenças tribais da aldeia onde trabalham. O filme recebeu o Leão de Prata de melhor curta no Festival de Veneza de 1997.

Be It A story day. A medical clinic, a classroom and several paths. A man and a woman are caught in a deadly trap, and yet the man does not what to leave. What could be holding him back? He doesn't speak the language of these people and doesn't really know them. It seems it is a desire to help other people. At least that's what is being said. The woman, life itself, tries to take him away - but to no avail. Does she love him? There can be no doubt. But the question is if he loves her. Is he really there? It seems that he is living in a dream, and even when they kiss, she seems surprised that he has been able to make contact. The only other people around in their isolated world are two sick children. A cruel hardened little girl and Ifada, a young albino with a simple mind and a sensitive heart. Could this be a mirror image of the two adults? Suddenly it seems like no one can be saved, nothing created and nothing solved. SO BE IT is the eerie tale about two modern young people who struggle in vain to fight against the tribal beliefs in the village where they work. It received the Silver Lion for best short film at the Venice Film Festival in 1997.

Gaze of the Stars / O olhar das estrelas Betinho, um menino de doze anos, vive com seu tio Salomão. Ele está constantemente à procura de algo para aliviar o tédio. A oportunidade apresenta-se sob a forma da descoberta de um segredo, que seu tio Salomão guarda em uma lata - um segredo que distorceu a realidade de Salomão e limitou sua capacidade para a vida. Saide, um vizinho conhecido por bater em sua mulher, assusta Betinho. Saide também esconde um segredo de toda a comunidade. Os segredos de Saide e Salomão os fazem inimigos, mas na verdade carregam o mesmo fardo. Quem irá redimi-los de seu ciclo interminável de autotortura? Betinho, a twelve-year-old boy lives with his uncle Salomao. He constantly seeks something to break the boredom with. The opportunity is a secret that Salomao hides in an old tin - a secret that has distorted Salomao's reality and limited his capacity for life. Saide, a neighbour who is reputed to be constantly beating his wife, scares Betinho. Saide is hiding a secret from the whole community, too. The secrets Salomao and Saide hold makes them enemies, but they are really suffering the same fate. Who will redeem them from their endless cycle of self-torture? Does their redemption lie in the curiosity of the young boy?

A paixão imediatamente se acendee causa dificuldades até levar a uma confrontação entre os enxadristas. Sabriya é a história de uma amizade que tem por pano de fundo a sublime paisagem do sul da Tunísia. Foi exibido como parte da seleção oficial do Festival de Veneza de 1997, ganhou o Prix de la Co-operation na FESPACO, além do Prix Special du Jury no Festival de Clermont-Ferrand, também em 1997. Em 1998 o filme recebeu o segundo prêmio no Festival da Costa do Marfim.

In the Tunisian desert two friends who are mad about chess own a café. In a train passing through the gorges of Seldla, one of the two of them meets Sarah, a beautiful woman. Passion strikes up like fire between them, which causes difficulty and ultimately leads to confrontation between the two chess players. SABRIYA is the story of friendship set in the sublime landscape of Southern Tunisia. It played in official selection at the 1997 Venice Film Festival, won the Prix de la Co-operation at FESPACO, and the Prix Special du Jury Fat the Clermont-Ferrand Festival in the same year. In 1998 it received second prize at the Ivory Coast Festival.

Last Picture / A última fotografia Taguma, um jovem fotógrafo africano, está hipnotizado pela beleza de Mukai. Seu modesto estúdio está decorado com fotos dela. No entanto, capturar seu coração não é tão fácil como capturar sua imagem. Mukai já é casada com Solomon, um homem bem mais velho que Taguma. Solomon é uma boa alma que, sem querer, através de uma comédia de erros, aproxima Taguma e Mukai. A certa altura, a sinceridade espontânea da estética de Taguma torna-se uma obsessão surda mas ardente. Como exorcizar sua paixão por Mukai e dela libertar-se? Poderia ser com uma última fotografia?

The
Last Picture Taguma, a young African photographer is entranced by the beauty of Mukai. His modest studio is adorned with photographs of her. It is however not as easy to capture her heart as it is to capture her image. Mukai is already married to Solomon, a much older man than Taguma. Solomon is a gentle soul, who unwittingly, through a comedy of errors, brings Taguma and Mokai together. At some point, the sincere spontaneity of Taguma's aesthetic becomes a quiet but consuming obsession. How could he exorcise his infatuation with Mukai and free himself? Could he do it through the last picture?

Homecoming /O retorno para casa Quando Sophia volta para casa, após vários anos trabalhando para uma família branca, sente-se uma estranha frente ao marido, aos filhos e à sua própria irmã. A irmã Selna cuidou dos filhos de Sophia em sua ausência e os pequenos ligaram-se à tia. Isso é ilustrado de maneira pungente quando uma delas se machuca e ambas as "mães" vêm em seu socorro. Quando ela descobre que sua irmã está grávida de seu próprio marido, a atmosfera meditativa é estilhaçada por uma explosão emocional que ameaça a destruição do mundo de Sophia. Filmado em contraponto à beleza áspera do deserto, The Homecoming é uma reflexão sobre a coragem necessária para aceitar mudanças e seguir adiante. Note o papel desempenhado pela velha senhora quando esta tenta aplicar sua sabedoria no correr do julgamento.

When Sophia returns home, after many years of working for a white family, she finds herself a stranger to her husband, her children and her sister. Her sister, Selna, has looked after Sophia's children in her absence and has grown attached to them. This is poignantly illustrated when one of the children hurt themselves, and both "mothers" rushes to her aid. When she discovers that Selna is expecting her husband's child, the pensive mood is shattered by an outburst in which Sophia's world threatens to come apart. Filmed against the stark beauty of the desert, "The Homecoming" is a reflection on the courage that is required to accept changes and move on. Note the role of the old lady as she attempts to apply her wisdom throughout the judgement. |
